Reef Boericke 3rd
On the hotest day of the year in sweltering heat, both boys fenced extremely well to take silver and bronze in the U10 Nationals. After two rounds of poules, Max was joint 1st seed and Reef 13th. Max comfortably made his way through the tableau to the semi's were he encountered a strong fencer from Northern Ireland. Initally after a tight fight he went on to win 10-6, and through to the final. Reef after losing 3 fights from the two rounds had a much tougher path through the tableau. In the L16 he drew a good Scottish fencer who was seeded 4th. A very close fight all the way with both fencers taking turns to lead by a point. As the seconds ran down Reef kept his composure to score again to make it 9-7 and through to the quarters. His next opponent was someone he had lost to in the poule, but this did not faze him. It was a close fight, and particularly nervous for the supporting Mother and Coach! He kept his composure to win and through to the semi's where he encountered a much improved Niccolo Fusai. He proved too good and moved into the final against Max. Max fenced well in the final, but was beaten 10-6.
The coach is very proud of the boys and finishing second and third is a fantastic result - Well Done!!

U18 Boys: Edz Maldoom L64
U18 Girls: Amy Hyman 2nd
U14 Girls: Evangeline Ling 5th, Issy Standing 25th, Amiee Prefontaine 40th
U12 Boys: Max Deering 24th
Congratulations to Amy Hyman on finishing second in the U18 Girls competition. After a poor start by her standards in the poule, Amy turned it around in the D.E. knocking out the number 1 seed in the L16. After some close fights in quarters and semi finals, Amy fenced with control and nerve to progress into the final. Dogged by illness and injury recently, Amy's fitness levels were not the best understandably and the final proved too demanding on the body. Nevertheless, finishing second is a great acheivement and a fantastic result!
In the U14 Girls event after the poule, the seeding resulted in the girls meeting one another in the D.E. Amiee drew Issy in the L64 with Issy progressing to the L32 where she had to fence Evangeline. After a close fight, Evangeline went through to the L16 13-11. Evangeline progressed through to the quarters and finished 5th. Very well done to Evangeline in her first Nationals and automatic qualification for next years event. Issy and Amiee gained valuable experience which they can use for next year as they have another year in the U14's.
Max Deering (aged 9) finished 2nd in the South East U12's event to qualify for his first Nationals. He fenced very well in the poule winning 4/6 fights and only losing 5-4 to the eventual winner. Seeded 22nd out of 68 he comfortably won his first D.E. but then came up against a high seed in the L32. Losing a creditable 10-5 to Felix Sudderick who went on to finish 2nd, his result is a great acheivement with still two more years in this age category.

Congratulations to all the club fencers who took part in the Academy Cup at the weekend. 10 Fencers represented the club winning 2 golds, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. Special mention must be made to those who competed in their first competition - Zach Boser who still has another 2 years left in the U10's fenced superbly to win 5 fights in the first round and finish 8th out of 15 fencers. Tabi Bullen fenced really well, winning 6 out of 9 fights in the first round and went on to take the bronze medal in her first competition! Max Bernheim fenced very well in the U12's winning 5 out of 9 fights and finishing 12th out of 20 fencers. A very promising start in his competition debut considering it was his first time training on the electric boxes 2 days before the event.

- Eton Foil LPJS 22nd March 2009
Max Deering and Reef Boericke took part in the U9's on Sunday and fenced superbly to win gold and bronze respectively. In the first round both finished undefeated in their poule and were seeded first and second out of a total of 24 fencers. The top six seeds then fenced in a poule unique to decide the medal places. Reef finished with 3V 2D to claim the Bronze medal and Max finished with 4V 1D to win his second title in consecutive weekends.
The Club's Coaches are very pleased with the boy's debut competitive season. Reef has won two bronze medals in his first three competitions and Max has won medals in all of his competitions to date -winning two silver and two gold medals. This is a fantastic start and is very encouraging for the future.
- Invicta Open 21-22 March 2009

Another six medal haul was achieved by the club fencers this weekend in the Academy Youth Cup. Reef Boericke, Hannah Poole and Amiee Prefontaine won bronze medals in their respective age groups and the first time they have won medals. They fenced very well and thoroughly deserve this success after all their hard work. Issy Standing and Max Deering followed up on their success last weekend at the Surrey Youth Champs by coming second in the U12 Foil. A remarkable achievement by Max, who has another three years left in the U12 event! Max followed this result by winning a nail-biting final match in the U10's. Coming back from 4- 6 down, he fenced with control and patience to win 7-6.
